This lesson will provide the students an opportunity to learn some of  the many interesting properties of Right triangles.

Subject:  Geometry
Topic:  Right triangles
Grade Level:  8th - 12th
Student Lesson:  What is special about Right Triangles?

This lesson addresses the following California State Standards:

Grades: 8th - 12th: Geometry

Standard  14.0

Students prove the Pythagorean theorem.

Standard  15.0

Students use the Pythagorean theorem to determine distance and find missing lengths of sides of right triangles.

Standard  20.0

Students know and are able to use angle and side relationships in problems with special right triangles, such as 30°, 60°, and 9triangles and 45°, 45°, and 9 triangles.

This lesson will allow the students to meet the following objectives:

1.  Given an incomplete worksheet of a Pythagorean Theorem Proof, students will produce the missing steps to successfully complete the proof.

2.  Given the dimensions of a rectangular box, students will apply the Pythagorean Theorem to find the length of a diagonal of the box.

3.  Given one side of a special right triangle, students will determine the lengths of the other two sides by applying the "side relationship" conjectures.
