Introduction
This lesson will guide teachers to be able to help their students to use the manipulatives of cups and tiles to develop their understanding of how to do multi-step equations.

Subject Algebra
Topic: Multi-step equations
Grade Level:8
Student Lesson Page

This page is a self guided page for students. The materials should be provided for them.

Standards Addressed

Grade 8

1.1 Students use properties of numbers to demonstrate whether assertions are true or false.

10.0 Students add, subtract, multiply, and divide monomials and polynomials. Students solve multi-step problems, including word problems, by using these techniques.

13.0 Students add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational expressions and functions. Students solve both computationally and conceptually challenging problems by using these techniques.

Instructional Objectives

1.) Students will be able to demonstrate how to solve multi-step equations.

2.) Students will show understanding of the relationship between cups and tiles and variables and numbers.

Student Activities

Introductory Activity
Students will take a pre-test.

Enabling Activities

Allow students to "gently play" with manipulatives for about 5 minutes. You need to remind and enforce your rules for the manipulatives.

My Rules

One-Step Equations

Multi-Step Equations

During the guided practice, ensure that the students understand how to represent the problems using variables and numbers as well as cups and tiles.

Culminating Activity

Review how to solve multi-step equations using paper and pencil. Most students will need more days of this same lesson to have a better understanding of how cups and tiles will relate to variables and numbers on paper.

Assessment
Give students a Post Test

Results
After implementing your lesson (sometime between January & March), insert a chart of your pre-test, post-test, and culminating assessment data.
