Students will examine the events that led to the Armenian genocide including the rise of the young Turks and decline of the Ottoman empire.

Student Activities
Introduction will be a teacher directed discussion of the days topic, the Armenian genocide.
A map will then be introduced allowing students to visualize the size of the Ottoman empire as well as the different peoples it encompassed including Armenia.
A lecture will then be delivered on the details of the event and importantly the cultural background of the groups involved, this discussion will employ as many primary sources as are available.
The final activity will be for students to compose a short essay discussing how this event took place.
Introductory Activity
Students will be introduced to the to the concept of genocide through a discussion leading to the correct definition of genocide.  This will be followed by an overhead map of the Ottoman empire, displaying the subject peoples of the empire.
Enabling Activities)
Teacher will use primary source readings to fill out an explanatory lecture describing the event and the people involved.  This should be an interactive lecture with as much student involvement as possible, this can be accomplish through Socratic questions and answers.  Any visual aids will help to engage students in the subject.
 


Culminating Activity
Students will compose a short essay that will emphasize the cause of the event, the genocide, as well the cultural and religious similarities and differences of the groups involved.

Assessment
The essay will be used as the assessment tool for this lesson.  It will be graded for structure, spelling, and grammar as well as the students ability to apply the the new information they have gleaned from the lesson. Results
The intended result of this lesson is for students to understand the idea of genocide, to be able to place the Ottoman empire on a map of the world, and comprehend the importance of both culture and religion in the Armenian genocide. Web Resources & Supplementary Materials
