Introduction
This lesson will reinforce the students' understanding that caffeine and nicotine are potentially harmful to the human body and mind.  The students will explore via the Web and through personal insight the importance of understanding the psychological and physiological effects of consuming caffeine and nicotine.

Challenge Standards Addressed for High School Health Education
Standard 1:  The student understands and demonstrates ways in which his or her health and well-being can be enhanced and maintained.
Students in high school who meet this standard will be able to evaluate food choices that can promote optimal health and reduce the risk of disease.
Standard 3:  The student will understand and demonstrate behaviors that reduce the risk of becoming involved in potentially dangerous situations and will know how to react to situations in ways that help to protect his or her health.
Students in high school who meet this standard will be able to examine the influence of tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use on performing physical tasks and making judgements.
Standard 9:  The student will know how to identify products, services, and information that may be helpful or harmful to his or her health.
Students in high school who meet this standard will be able to analyze the influence of advertising and marketing on the selection of healthful and nutritional products.

Instructional Objectives

By the end of the lesson, the students will have an increased understanding of the physical and psychological effects of caffeine, nicotine and other related stimulants.

The student will show a five percent increase in understanding of this subject area in comparison to the pre and post tests.

Student Activities
Introductory Activity

A Ten-question multiple-choice Pre-Test will be administered prior to the Activity. 

Enabling Activity

The student will learn through various online experiences and readings the importance of the effects of caffeine and nicotine on the mind and body.

Culminating Activity

A Ten-question Post-Test will be conducted to identify what students have learned on the effects of caffeine and nicotine on the human body and an information table will be created showing the improvements of the students.

Assessment

           The Pre- and Post-Tests were administered to 20 randomly selected students from my Health Education classes.  These tests were conducted to identify prior knowledge (Pre-Test) and knowledge obtained during the activity (Post-Test).

The results were compiled and can be viewed in either Excel or Powerpoint format.
