Instructional Objectives

This lesson will encourage students to express themselves in writing while learning free verse poetry.  Students use their prior experience in their writing.  Students select five emotions to use or demonstrate in their poetry.

Student Activities

Students will take a pre-test on twenty vocabulary words related to poetry.  At the end of the lesson, students will take a post test to assess what was learned.

Introductory Activity
Students will be asked to read and analyze selected free verse poetry examples.  The examples will give students an overall picture of "free verse poetry."

Enabling Activity(ies)
Students will write one free verse poem for each emotion selected. Students will use Microsoft Publisher to enhance each poem with graphics.  Students will select two of their poems to submit to the class anthology.

Culminating Activity
They may also publish their poetry into individual poetry books. For extra credit, students may use Power Point to put their poetry on slides for a class demonstration.
