Introduction
Even children who don't live near the ocean have a facination with the sea and its wonderful creatures. In this mini unit, kinder kids will learn that oceans cover most of our world and that ocean water has different characteristics than fresh water.  While fish and whales may share the same ocean habitat, they belong to different animal families. This mini unit is designed to be used with cross age buddies to assist kinder kids.

Student Activities
Introductory Activity

Students will take a pretest to determine their current knowledge of the ocean, fish and whales.  The pretest can be administered by the teacher before cross age buddies begin working with the kinders if desired.

Enabling Activities
1. Students will visit a NASA internet site to view an image of the Earth from space.
2.  Students will play a game using an inflatable "Earth"  beach ball to get a feel for the land/water ratio of the Earth's surface.
3.  Students will conduct an experiment that illustrates one characteristic difference between fresh and salt water.
4.  Students will visit an internet site for children on fish. They will be able to download and print a fish coloring page of their choice from this site.
5.  Students will visit an internet site for children on whales.

Culminating Activity
Students will take a post test to determine how much they learned from this mini unit.
