Purpose
As thorough and accurate research is the foundation of the "I Am"
project, the Issue File is designed to assist you in conducting library and
internet research along with organizing your material, separating fact from
fiction and writing annotated bibliographies.

Into Activities
Someone Significant to Me
Each of us is influenced by the lives of those around us, and we learn from
the the experiences of others. This activity
encourages students to
acknowledge a person who is significant in their lives. Students will
download and print a copy of the handout to be completed for this activity. (Project Write/Aspire 10/00)
My Timeline:
This activity helps students realize that both historical and
current events have an impact on our lives. This activity helps students
to explore world events that have happened during their lives. Students
will download and print a copy of the handout to be completed for this
activity. Students will create parallel timelines with one consisting of
events in their life and the other consisting of events in the world during
the same time span. Students can collaborate with parents and other
family members. Upon completion of timelines, students will share in
small groups with: Comparison of similar events

Living Culture
Someone in the News Today:
It is important that students make the connection that a biographical
study is not limited to persons who are no longer living. This activity
will draw student's attention to current events
and people who are making
important contributions today. Students are to bring in a copy of their
local newspaper or newsmagazines as sources to be used as resources to
complete the Report about Someone Important in the News (Project
Write/Aspire 10/00).
Read: Gandhi: Peaceful Warrior
by Rae Bains
Gandhi: Peaceful Warrior gives a special emphasis to
Mahatma Gandi's early years and the events that molded his character. It
tells the story of how Gandhi challenged the belief that the way to fight
injustice is to use violence against violence. It affirms the values of
courage, commitment and self-confidence and kindles the initiative to make a

Guidelines to Through
Activities
Step 1
Select a topic from the MULTICULTURAL "I AM" speech topics list.
Generate specific questions to investigate regarding your biographical
character.
Questions should cover the following: Important Events, Challenges,
Accomplishments and Impact or Influence on United States History.
Step 2
Investigate resource availability.
Go to the library and using periodical guides, newspaper indices, etc, locate
articles on your topic. Using the internet, locate and print a minimum of
five (5) articles from at least three different sources (book, magazine,
newspaper, media, encyclopedia, interview, etc.)
Step 3
Read each article and record on note cards:
Correct bibliography information , notes and direct quotes "Annotated
Bibliography" responding to your questions prepared in step 1.

Final
Organize your "Issue File" by putting the printed copies of your
articles with their annotated bibliographies in order by category:
Important Events, Challenges, Accomplishments and Impact/Influence on United
States History.
Additionally, your issue file must have: Title Page, Table of
Contents, Introduction, (Articles with Annotated Bibliographies), Summary
Analysis, and a Bibliography Page. (Scoring Rubric)
