This unit covers
Mendeleev and other chemists in developing the periodic table.
Subject: Chemistry Science: Chemistry This lesson addresses the standard:
The periodic table displays the elements in increasing atomic number
and shows how periodicity of the physical and chemical properties of the
elements relates to atomic structure.
a)
Students
know how to relate the position of an element in the periodic table to
its atomic number and atomic mass.

Student Experiment with metals and nonmetals to identify them by their properties. 3. Organization of the periodic table and its significance for identifying metals, nonmetals, semimetals or metalloids 4. Periodic table worksheets and activities 5. Sizes of atoms and how they relate to position on the table 6. Activities on Periodic and Group Trends Introductory Activity 1. Display in random
order a number of the elements and compounds from your stockroom. Include
a variety of elements that were known in ancient times.

Enabling
Activity(ies)
anchored link (text or image) 1. Use an illustration of Mendeleev's original periodic table of the elements. Ask students to compare this to the modern periodic table. 2. Have students examine the atomic numbers on the periodic table to see if any are out of numerical sequence. Have them do the same with the atomic masses. 3. Assign letters or numbers to all or some of the elements. Then write down chemical and physical properties on separate index cards. Keep a separate list of each name. Ask the students to organize them based on the information given. 4. Metal and Nonmetal Lab to test and see the differences. 5.Coinium Lab
to understand isotopes and atomic mass.
